“How soon after plastic surgery can I….?”
This is one of the most common questions plastic surgeons hear from their clients during pre-surgery consultations. Women who choose to undergo breast augmentation surgery are generally anxious to know when their lives will return to normal after the procedure, whether it is buying a bra or lifting over 15 pounds. Some women might have the luxury of an extended recovery period, if needed. However, most breast surgery candidates are professionals, working mothers, and college students who simply can’t take an extended amount of time off of work or away from their other responsibilities.
Listen to Your Body’s Signals
When it relates to physical activity or physical strain, I generally tell my patients that it is better to listen to your body’s signals. This is not to say that you are unable to resume your normal workout routine or lift your baby within a short of amount of time – it is only to caution you to take care of yourself afterwards, just as you would do after any other surgical procedure. Your body will be your best guide in letting you know how much weight you can carry safely, or how much physical strain you can take on in your exercise routine.
So Give Me a Number Here – 1 week? 1 month?
Most of my clients are able to resume daily workouts, and yes, even buy a bra, within two to five weeks after surgery. In fact, you’ll find that the recovery is much less time-consuming than you might think, and it will go by quickly for you. The gentler you are on your body during recovery, the better and faster your body will heal; but this doesn’t mean that you can’t continue your daily life the way you are used to living it.
Routine Will Return Soon Enough
Choosing breast augmentation is a major decision, but it doesn’t have to have a negative impact on your daily routine. With some of the new pain-free recovery methods, some women are able to resume their normal activities the day following their surgery, whether that be going to work, going shopping, or going out to eat.
