Breast Implant Sizing and Fitting: Important Elements to Your Satisfaction

If you think the only women who get breast implants are those who want very large breasts, think again! The majority of women who opt for breast augmentation surgery increase their size by only one or two cup sizes. Breast implants are all about “just the right curves.”

While the ultimate decision as to size is very much up to you, it’s your surgeon’s job to help you make an informed decision. When women come to me for a consultation, we measure:

1.         The width of the breasts,

2.         The cup size of the breasts, and

3.         The degree of stretch in the tissues of the breasts.

All of these measurements must be taken into account. For example, if you want to increase your breast size significantly, there are risks involved. If your implants are too large, the breast tissue may stretch to the point that additional surgery is required to reverse the condition. The added weight could even cause neck, shoulder, and back pain.

Your body’s proportions will also make a difference in terms of how well your clothes fit you. If your breasts are too large in comparison to the rest of your body, dresses will be very hard to find. Of course, the same is true if your breasts are too small. So, you certainly don’t want to come out of breast enlargement surgery with breasts that are smaller than you’d like. You want clothes to fit you better than ever!

The shape of your implants is another important element. Something as specific as the way your ribcages curve in your chest can make a difference as to how certain shapes will look on you. Only a very experienced surgeon who has devoted his or her life to breast augmentation surgery will be able to advise you about how different sizes and shapes will look on your body.

Another consideration is whether or not you want others to notice that you have had implants. If you choose a subtle increase in size, no one may ever know that you had the surgery.

Can you see how important it is to have a skilled surgeon guide you in your decisions? There are many things to think about when you decide to get breast implants, but they are worthwhile decisions to make. In my experience, as long as women do the preliminary work to determine exactly what they want, they are always thrilled with the results, and their breast implants will last them a lifetime!
