Breast Augmentation and Working Out

Many of my clients who decide to undergo breast augmentation surgery are active outdoor enthusiasts. Since my practice is based in one of the most beautiful areas of the country for climbing, hiking, rafting, skiing, and many other outdoor activities, a lot of my patients tend to be concerned about when they can return to their normal workout or exercise routine.

As with any major surgery, it is important that you allow your body adequate time to recuperate after breast augmentation. This doesn’t mean, however, that you have to completely stop your active lifestyle. In fact, many of my clients are back on their feet and resuming their non-strenuous, normal activities the very next day after their surgery.

As for a timeline for returning to your more strenuous workout activities, I often advise that my patients wait at least three months before doing a lot of trunk or upper chest strength exercises. When these exercises are resumed, I suggest using lighter weights and doing more repetitions versus heavier weights with fewer repetitions.

In most cases, your body will be your guide – and you should listen closely to it. If an exercise is causing harmful stress to your chest muscles after breast augmentation surgery, you will be able to feel your limitations for those particular workout routines. Staying on the side of caution – at least for the first three months – is key to facilitating an easy transition back into your normal workout regimen.
